DanteO Tosco
700th Celebrations
DanteO Tosco
700° Celebrations
700 years have passed since the death of Dante Alighieri, yet his figure remains of great importance.
To celebrate the Supreme Poet and his Tuscan origins, the Regione Toscana (Tuscan Regional Council) has organized a series of initiatives, including this site, that will detail this extraordinary year. All the territories are involved in the creation of a widespread program that will take place throughout the region, with the collaboration of various public and private entities. Physical and virtual events, also realized using new technologies, will involve the entire region in the discovery of Dante’s many ties with Tuscany.

Dante’s journey has always been marked by torment and rebirth, a journey of hope through a reflection on values of a world in crisis that is experiencing the need for profound renewal. Now more than ever, that journey is current. Now more than ever, that reflection, humanity, understanding and rigor are necessary to look to the future and for us to be “reborn” anew.
That’s why Dante will be our travel companion in 2021, a friend by our side in a world wounded by the pandemic, reminding us that we have a past and we will have a future together, strengthened by the values and pride of belonging to the same land as Dante.
O Tosco”, Farinata degli Uberti addresses Dante in Canto X of the Inferno. Tosco, not Tuscan. There’s not a corner of this land that does not feature in the ‘Divine Comedy’. Dante represents a ubiquitous, deep-rooted toscanità, as seen in his firsthand knowledge and the 100 places in Tuscany mentioned in his terzine. I’d like to add a 101st place, Romagna Toscana, which was part of Tuscany until 1925.
Dante is the cultural father of all of Tuscany, but he’s more than that. He’s a friend, a relative who’s both near and far, a familiar presence even to those who haven’t studied literature. That’s why Tuscany will not be holding back on the 700th anniversary of his death. Despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic and the worries that hang over us, we will continue to valorize this milestone year and its symbolic value. Although we won’t be able to organize large public events and cultural initiatives, utmost attention will be paid to the poet, his work and cultural legacy. All the 101 places in Tuscany that Dante mentions in the Commedia will be involved in the celebrations, hosting all sorts of initiatives between June and September aimed at rediscovering and promoting this bond, also for the purposes of tourism. We’ll have an app featuring the events and a website for the cultural and tourism itineraries. There’ll be a documentary about Dante’s life by national public broadcaster Rai and a photographic exhibition based on the Alinari archives, which will begin its journey in the Palazzo della Presidenza Regionale.
There’ll be two symbolic dates: March 25, otherwise known as Tuscan New Year (and is still celebrated as such in Pisa), which Dante chose as the start date of his otherworldly journey and which will be celebrated this year as Dantedì; and May 14, the date used in 1865 to mark the 600th anniversary of the poet’s birthday, when flagbearers paraded to piazza Santa Croce. It was the start of Florence’s years as the capital of Italy and I sincerely hope that the health situation is such this May 14 that we will be able to organize a solemn procession to renew the tradition, to start over symbolically with Dante and the history of Florence.
We are all “toschi”; we know how to start afresh.
The site that promotes the Tuscan events celebrating Dante
This site is part of a number of initiatives coordinated by the Dante Celebrations’ Committee and is the tool that will serve to detail this extraordinary year. Other initiatives that are part of the project include the ‘Dante’s journeys app’, an app promoted by Fondazione Sistema Toscana that will involve tourists and lovers of history and literature in a culture-filled and fun treasure hunt based on Dante’s life and his relationship with the area. Toscana Promozione Turistica has developed ‘Le vie di Dante’, a series of thematic tourist and cycling itineraries that will connect Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. Rai Doc will broadcast ‘Dante Confidential’, a documentary on the life of the poet. There will also be a free and traveling photographic exhibition that will combine Alinari’s historical photographs and contemporary photos by Massimo Sestini with a Dante theme that will initially be set up on the first floor of the Presidency of the Region and then will continue its journey through various municipalities before finally returning to the Dante house museum in Florence. Above all, ‘Dante’s 101 places’ will amaze, the 94 municipalities and 7 geographical areas (Lunigiana, Garfagnana, Casentino, Mugello, Maremma, Val di Chiana and Romagna Toscana) mentioned directly by Dante in the verses of the Divine Comedy and that we will have the opportunity to rediscover during the year.
